New Center Will Propel Ontario’s Automotive Future

The Ontario government unveiled plans to invest in an Automotive Centre of Excellence in the city of Oshawa as part of the CA $2.5 billion GM Beacon Project.

Summary

  • Currently, Ontario’s automotive industry em-ploys over 130,000 people, represents about 20% of the province’s total manufacturing output, and comprises 90% of Canada’s total automotive industry, including all Canadian-built cars and light trucks.
  • Ontario is providing CA $58 million towards the center, which is currently under construction and will open in late 2009.
  • Oshawa’s new Automotive Centre of Excellence is part of the province’s CA $235 million
  • CA $2.5 billion GM Beacon Project announced in March 2005 as part of the CA $500 million Ontario Automotive Investment Strategy launched in April 2004.

  • Theutomotive mission plan estimates the size of the Indian automotive industry in 2016 between Rs 4.8 trillion and Rs 6.2 trillion.

Auto industry set to grow five fold by 2016

Summary

  • India and had limited contribution to the economy, currently contributing about 5% of the GDP and it is targeted to grow five fold by 2016 and account for over 10% of India’s GDP.
  • production of 185,000 units in 1970-71, the industry currently produces 11 million vehicles. And from a turnover of $34 billion, the industry is expected to reach a turnover of $150-200 billion in next ten years.
  • Exports have increased immensely from a mere 38,000 units in 1990-91 to 1.01 million units in 2006-07. Some estimates suggest that by 2010, car exports, alone would reach 1 million.
  • GDP is expected to have merely doubled. In other words, aim is to achieve industry output $145 billion and consequently, make the automotive sector’s contribution rise to at least 10% of the country’s GDP.
  • The target is to attract investment worth USD 35-40 billion by 2016

Thoughts

India’s automotive sector is definitely growing by leaps and bounds and we have the numbers to prove it. Their plans are ambitious and realistic. The right amount of investment in India could yield much greater rate of return.

  • Transportation Association, sales of hybrids increased to over 330,000 in 2007, up from over 9,000 in 2000
  • The automotive industry is one of the most successful industries in North America. In 2007, over 15 million vehicles were produced in North America, including three million produced in Canada and a little over two million in Mexico, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank 2008.
  • industry will see continued growth and sales in other types of fuel-efficient vehicles.
  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX) plant has ramped up its operation to 2,000 employees. TMMTX and its on-site suppliers employ 4,100 people and have invested a combined total of more than $1.5 billion. Plant employees and Toyota officials recently celebrated the 2008 Tundra being named Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year.
  • Austin automotive advantage positioned itself as a new centre for innovation in the automotive industry, just as Detroit has traditionally been the North American hub for manufacturing.

Thoughts

While Auto sales are slowing down in US and big job cuts, the automotive clusters in San Antonio and Austin Texas is flourishing. This is great news with additional job creation.

India: New car sales up 11.8% in fiscal year 2007-2008

Thoughts

Watch out for India. TATA motors purchase of Jaguar and Range Rover brands for $2.4 billion has put them on the global map. TATA name has enough leverage to enter foreign markets with their NANO
